Verizon Wants to Sell You Data for Your iPad… via MiFi

Verizon is looking to turn no-iPad 3G lemons in iPad Wi-Fi + MiFi lemonade by craftily counter-programming the official AT&T data plans with their own potent portable internet and router combo, says Engadget.

You’ll save $130 off the price of the iPad 3G, but a 5GB Verizon MiFi plan will run you $60 vs. “unlimited” AT&T data for $30. Then again, you can use the MiFi for more than one device (and more than one at a time).

So, is Verizon’s plan ..read more

AT&T CEO, Randall Stephenson, has been quoted in saying that the Apple iPad will be a “Wi-Fi driven product” so no customers should be concerned with poor 3G data. But it did not end there, he also went on to say the following.

“My expectation is that there’s not going to be a lot of people out there looking for another subscription.”

All of the above really makes those of us here at TiPb scratch our heads. Are those the type of ..read more

New Apple iPhone Ads Go After Boredom, Parents’ Hearts

Apple began airing two new iPhone ads last night during the Olympics (what hockey game?), one going after boredom by showing what you can do with your iPhone while you wait, and the other going after the hearts of parents (and grandparents) everywhere. Interestingly, neither featured the “app for that” or “app for almost everything” tag lines Apple has been using since 2008.

“On hold” starts off with the male caller being placed on hold, though he doesn’t mind because ..read more

Apple Doubles 3G Download Cap for iPhone to 20MB

iLounge discovered that Apple has stealthily doubled the limit for iPhone over-the-air 3G downloads from it’s previous 10MB cap to 20MB, though the reasons remain unclear:

it could be related to the impending release of the iPad, improvements in carrier bandwidth, or simply a desire to allow users to have anywhere access to larger applications on the App Store.

We’re getting 20MB shown in our tests as well, so we’ll just add this to VoIP over 3G, and SlingPlayer over 3G, as ..read more

The Boy Genius has been hearing from his AT&T contacts that it is highly likely AT&T will be selling the 3G version of Apple’s iPad in their corporate stores across the country.

Don’t get too excited thinking AT&T will offer any sort of subsidy, however, because that is simply not in the cards. The rumored plan is that AT&T will be pushing prepaid data plans along with transforming some of the in-store netbook display sections into substantial iPad display areas.
