An iPhone 4 user’s experience with the Android 2.1 powered Samsung Captivate on AT&T

I’ll preface this by saying before this review, I’ve hardly laid hands on an Android device, let alone considered throwing my iPhone aside to completely delve into the OS and see if I could actually survive without my iPhone.  In my time with an Android device, the short answer would be that Android would be a perfectly passable everyday phone.  But would I make the switch and ..read more

iPhone OS 4: iTunes streaming audio

I mentioned this during the iPhone live! #100 podcast, but iPhone OS 4 has taken a huge leap forward when it comes to streaming audio via the iTunes app. Since iPhone OS 2.2 you’ve been able to tap the title of a podcast to begin streaming (rather than downloading) the audio, even in the background while using other apps, but it was sometimes hit or miss. It would drop out, it would time out, you couldn’t really scrub through it, ..read more

Chad just Skyped me over 3G to tell me Skype has finally (finally!) released Skype 2.0 for iPhone with support for VoIP calling over 3G cell phone networks.

We’ll spare you the long drawn out AT&T, Apple, Skype drama and the out-loud wondering about why it took so long. We’ll also skip the reminder about how, with iPhone OS 4, you’ll be able to leave it running in the background. We figure you’ve already tapped through and are busily installing the ..read more

At the Google I/O 2 days back we heard the statement of the novel operating system for Android handsets, specifically Android OS 2.2, universally dubbed Froyo. Yesterday in an editorial we told you how fluky HTC Droid Incredible owners will be able to upgrade to the recent OS, and also how customers queuing up for the HTC Evo 4G, (Read More)

iPhone OS 4: Multitasking fast app switcher animation

iPhone OS 4 beta 2, released yesterday, has introduced a new, circling, side-switching animation for multitasking fast app switching. The new animation occurs when you switch between two apps either via the new, double-click-Home to trigger to launch the multitasking UI, or when one app calls another app (i.e. when you’re in Contacts and you tap to send a contact an SMS, as noted by @ranger_bill).

Launching or leaving an app retains the same, zoom-based effect as always (though the wallpaper ..read more

MacRumors got a look at the licensing agreement and noticed the following little gem with regards to free (like iPhone) vs. paid (like iPod touch) updates:

Apple will provide you any iPad OS software updates that it may release from time to time, up to and including the next major iPad OS software release following the version of iPad OS software that originally shipped from Apple on your iPad, for free. For example, if your iPad originally shipped with iPad 3.x ..read more

Tapped on App Store and what did I see? Updates for Tweetie, Loopt, Foursquare, and Flickr — and a couple of those say iPhone OS 3.2 (aka iPad) right there in the What’s New listing. (Yeah, that doesn’t mean 3.2 is coming to the iPhone or these are 1024×768 versions, likely just that they’re built using that SDK for maximum blackboxing on the iPad).

Tweetie [$2.99 - iTunes link] has just hit version 2.1.1 and brings iPhone OS 3.2 compatibility(!), Foursquare ..read more
